Has Hasbro re-made toys in the US? So rare is why

Hasbro made a rare thing in the American toy industry: re-starting the production of toys in the United States. They said the company is now working with producers in Massachusetts and plans to start producing clay toys, Play-Doh, in the second half of 2018.

The reason why it is rare is that according to the research company IBISWorld, 98.5% of the toys sold in the United States last year were manufactured outside the United States. Since Hasbro sold the Massachusetts factory to the Belgian company Cartamundi in 2015, there is no factory in the United States.

The main factories in Pellet are now in Turkey and China. Hasbro acquired Tonka, which owns Peleto, in 1991, and then Pelleto became one of the core products of Hasbro. According to Hasbro, Pellet produces more than 50,000 cans per year, and global sales increase by an average of 20% per year.

Although Hasbro did not specifically disclose the revenue of Pellet's contribution in the earnings report, the seven franchise brands such as Peleto, Rainbow Pony, Real Estate Tycoon and Transformers had revenues of US$2.327 billion in FY2016. , accounting for nearly half of the total revenue.

Producing this practice in the United States is easy to think of Trump's policy of encouraging American manufacturing. Now the US government is considering high tariffs on products imported into the United States, and Trump often mentions this.

Hasbro stressed that there is no relationship between the two, their CEO Brian Goldner said in an interview: "We are not replacing the production area, but increasing production," he said, although the cost of manufacturing Pelto in the United States will be relatively high, But the final shipping cost will be low. But large-scale production will greatly reduce logistics costs, but also take into account other costs such as labor, otherwise it is difficult to explain that all of the products before Hasbro are produced outside the United States. So the CEO's statement sounds more like a blind man. In essence, it may still be related to Trump's policy.

Hasbro did not disclose whether other products would also be transferred to the United States for production. In addition to tariff and freight factors, Hasbro is also reducing the proportion of Chinese factory production to total production due to rising labor costs in China, with the goal of reducing it from the current 88% to two-thirds.

Other American toy companies are still waiting for specific policies for the time being. Mattel has not produced products in the United States since 2002, and their executives said last month that if the US government really imposes high taxes on imported products, the company will have to adjust production. Lego, who has a factory in Mexico, said that it is still waiting.
