Abstract: Cloud computing is a novel computing model, which is rapidly developing and gradually being widely used. The author explains the importance and feasibility of the use of cloud computing for the education industry, especially higher vocational colleges, from the aspects of the basic concepts of cloud computing, the basic characteristics of cloud computing and the opportunities and challenges that cloud computing brings to higher vocational colleges .
Keywords: cloud computing; education reform; opportunities; challenges
In 2007, the concept of cloud computing was first proposed. Subsequently, the rapid development of cloud computing technology has attracted much attention. Several major companies in the IT industry have successively planned and implemented this technology. Amazon has "elastic computing cloud", Microsoft has "cloud computing", Google has "GAE cloud computing platform", IBM has "blue cloud" plan, etc. A considerable number of enterprises and individuals have already enjoyed the benefits of cloud computing convenient. Of course, cloud computing technology will inevitably be applied to the education industry, triggering a technological explosion in the education industry.
1. The basic concept of cloud computing
1. What is cloud
The so-called cloud is a group of computers, and each group includes hundreds of thousands or even millions of computers.
2. What is cloud computing
Cloud computing is actually a brand-new computing concept and model. On the basis of the Internet, software is used to virtualize scheduling and management of hardware resources, and dynamically create highly virtualized resources to form a huge virtual resource pool. . Users can enjoy various IT resources such as data, applications, and computing power through the network. In such an environment, all computing resources, such as servers, can be dynamically generated from the hardware infrastructure, modified and later adapted to the needs of the task.
One of the core concepts of cloud computing: improving the processing power of the "cloud". The purpose is to reduce the user's processing burden, so that the user terminal is reduced to a pure input and output device, and can use the "cloud" processing power according to their needs. In the future, we can enjoy "cloud" services as needed through the network like electricity and water, as long as there is a computer or mobile phone like an Internet terminal.
At present, cloud computing has been set up around us, such as web search, email, photo sharing, network map, etc.
Second, the basic characteristics of cloud computing
1. Cloud computing can provide huge and safe information storage services, users do not have to worry about problems such as virus damage or information loss. Here, there are professional institutional management and advanced computing equipment. At the same time, strict permission management strategies also allow users to share data with designated people.
2. Cloud computing has low requirements for terminal equipment and is easy to use. As long as you have a computer, mobile phone or pda that can connect to the Internet, you can enjoy cloud services.
3. Cloud computing enables remote processing of files and sharing of data and applications between different devices. In the cloud, there is only one copy of the data, as long as all users within the authority can access or use the same piece of data at the same time and in different places via the Internet. This is different from the traditional operation mode. The traditional model is centered on the desktop system, while cloud computing is centered on the network. Data computing will run on a large number of distributed computers, which will strengthen the computing and storage capacity required by users, and facilitate users to access the network in various ways to obtain applications and services provided online. In the traditional mode, if a personal computer or other storage device fails, the data in it will be lost, and cloud computing can effectively avoid such problems.
3. Opportunities and challenges facing higher vocational colleges
In view of these characteristics of cloud computing, cloud computing will certainly play an extremely important role in many fields. There is no doubt that for vocational colleges, it will bring many opportunities and challenges.
1. Opportunities
(1) Provide cheap software services and huge data storage centers for vocational colleges
A core application of cloud computing is SAAS (Software as a Service). SAAS is to access the software on the Internet as a service. There is no need to purchase, only rental, and many software on the network is free. As long as users access the server through the Internet, they can use various software or edit documents, and then send the url of the document to other users, so that users with certain permissions can access or even modify, thereby eliminating the trouble of upgrading software and hardware . User data can also be backed up on the server. For example, in Google's online office system, the user's data is stored on the server, and the relevant operators provide large and secure data storage. In this way, users do not have to worry about data loss. It not only guarantees the safety of important data, but also reduces unnecessary labor for repeated storage, and also saves storage space. Moreover, user terminal equipment has lower requirements, and some old machines can be used as long as they can run browser tools, which saves users' hardware and software costs.
(2) Build a top-level teacher research platform
Due to different education and teaching goals and regional differences, many higher vocational colleges have relatively insufficient investment in scientific research, or the experimental equipment purchased by investing a lot of money has faced the embarrassment of being eliminated within a few years, resulting in many vocational colleges. Teachers at the school cannot carry out some cutting-edge and cutting-edge research projects. After the introduction of cloud computing, through a certain coordinated scheduling strategy, tens of thousands or even millions of ordinary computers can be combined to provide super-computing power that can compete with supercomputers, thereby completing tasks that cannot be completed by a single computer. To help teachers build an experimental environment configured like a world-class university, greatly reducing the cost and threshold of hardware, software platform environment and super computing power required by teachers for scientific research, and cultivating more advanced for vocational colleges Talent laid the foundation.
(3) Bring a change in the learning model
The first is the change in the way students learn. Build your own learning circle through SAAS, complete network learning and informal learning, and form your own benign network learning space. Students no longer passively receive knowledge, but can choose learning resources autonomously according to their knowledge structure and learning direction, and You can form a learning group with people who have the same learning goals and conduct more efficient collaborative learning. Even cloud computing can be used as a virtual laboratory to help students transform theory into practice.
The second is the transformation of teachers' teaching methods. Change the traditional way of class, in the classroom, teachers construct or screen teaching resources, and guide students to learn to use resources. It can be said that this kind of teaching method breaks through the limitation of teachers' teaching qualities, allowing students to freely travel in a broader learning sea.
(4) Build an education cloud to co-construct and share educational information resources
With the rapid development of the information industry in recent years and the vocational colleges' emphasis on the construction of educational information resources, many schools have accumulated a large amount of educational information resources. However, the degree of resource sharing is low, the mutual cooperation is small, and the distribution of resources is unreasonable The phenomenon is more serious. How to eliminate these drawbacks? The author believes that the hardware facilities of all schools can be added to the "cloud" system, so as to achieve true resource sharing in vocational colleges and even the entire education system.
2. Risk
Of course, because the current development of computing technology is not yet very mature, especially the relevant laws and regulations can not keep up with the pace of the development of the information industry, cloud users also face certain risks and challenges.
(1) Requirements for network bandwidth
Cloud computing requires a high-speed and very stable broadband network and secure and stable network facilities, which is currently a bottleneck.
(2) Potential danger
The user does not necessarily know which server where all the data information of the cloud system is stored and in which country, which also involves related issues such as information security and confidentiality agreements.
In the event of a virus or hacker attack, no operator can ensure the safety of information. Once the data in the cloud system is destroyed, the consequences may be unimaginable.
The data in the cloud system is confidential to users other than its owner, but it is public to operators. Once a data breach occurs, for users, the loss may be heavy, and for teachers' scientific research work, there is also the possibility of scientific results being plagiarized.
At present, each operator has its own policies and lacks an open and unified standard that is accepted by all cloud computing operators. This brings trouble to users in different cloud systems, which requires the improvement of related systems.
4. Conclusion
Essentially, cloud computing is a new way of information operation that is efficient, flexible, inexpensive, and energy-efficient. Although its development is still very imperfect, with the gradual maturity of cloud computing technology and the continuous improvement of relevant regulations, the author believes that cloud computing will definitely create opportunities for the reform and development of education.
