Recently, the Musée royal de Mariemont in Morlanwelz, Belgium, opened its latest exhibition, the Stargate. A team from VIGO Universal, a 3D print studio in Namur, Belgium, built a true full-size interstellar gate for the exhibition with 3D printing, laser cutting and CNC milling machines.
The exhibition delved into the relationship between Egyptian mythology and geek culture (the first Stargate was found in Giza in 1928). In addition to the amazing 3D printed Stargate, the exhibition also features some of the set, costumes and props in the 1994 Stargate movie.
In the Stargate series, the impressive Stargate is an interstellar transportation system. The VIGO Universal team spent more than 1,000 hours building the door. The details of the Stargate, the scale and the overall accuracy of the 3D printed structure are quite surprising. The door consists of more than 2,000 3D printed parts and 10,000 cut holes. It's so realistic, people even think it can transport itself to another world.
VIGO Universal has been established for 5 years. They used a lot of technology in the process of building the Stargate. They have a Replication Center with a FlashForge 3D printer farm, a Marchant Dice cutter and a Thunder Laser laser cutter. In addition, they collaborated with Arnaud Quertinmont and Bertrand Federinov at the Royal Museum of Marmaris.
The completed Stargate is nearly 7 meters in diameter and has been expertly installed in front of the Royal Museum of Marimon. The exhibition will last until November 20th, which means you have more than two months to visit this magical door. According to VIGO Universal, visitors will soon be able to activate the door via the smartphone app!
