The Three Stages of Development and Evolution of Magazine Paper in China

The development of magazine paper has roughly gone through the following stages.

(1) The magazine layout in the early days of the founding of the PRC was mostly text-based, and the use of letterpress printing techniques allowed the use of letterpress paper to meet the requirements of editing and publishing. At that time, the size of the magazine was relatively simple. Basically, it was based on 16-inch, which is 1/16 of the 787mm×1092mm size paper.

(2) In the 1970s and 1980s, the printing industry carried out large-scale transformation and upgrading of technology and equipment in the entire industry. The foreign language printing factory took the lead in adopting the offset printing machine to print books and magazines. Subsequently, the production of various magazines gradually adopted the photoprinting and offset printing processes, which in turn prompted the paper mills to produce offset printing books suitable for offset printing, especially for halftone printing. Replaces relief printing paper.

(3) In recent years, with the take-off of China's economy and the rapid development of the cultural publishing industry, the magazine has also shown a great development in the flourishing development.

Performance 1: Many magazines use two-color or four-color color printing. In the use of paper, many magazines have been printed using offset or coated paper.

Performance 2: The size of the magazine's open book grows from small to large, that is, from 16 copies of past positive print paper to 16 copies of generous print or more. For example, 1/16 copies of 850mm × 1168mm size paper, 1/16 copies of 889mm × 1194mm size paper, 1/16 copies of 880mm × 1230mm size paper, 1/16 copies of 880mm × 1270mm size paper, and 635mm × 965mm size paper 1/8 open original and so on.

Performance 3: The diversification of the ratio of size, width and height. In addition to the rough size of the design based on the ratio of the golden section, there are also special-shaped sizes that do not obey the golden rule, such as ultra-wide and ultra-high. This raises new issues for the printing and binding process and for the diversified development services of papermaking companies for magazines.

(4) After the magazine pursued the wave of high-grade paper and multi-color printing, many magazines have now returned to the road of rationality.

Performance 1: The use of light-coated paper increases. The author believes that except for fashion magazines like fashion and automobiles, and magazines that need to faithfully reflect natural objects, magazines in general, especially current affairs, professional and technical magazines, are cheaper than coated paper, and their printing effect is slightly lower than that of coated paper. Poor light-coated paper is more suitable.

Performance 2: Use low quantification of paper. For example, the 80g/m2 light-coated paper that we originally purchased for a magazine, because the magazine was changed to use 70g/m2 light-coated paper, has still failed to digest inventory. For another example, magazines issued for overseas use dictionaries and other low-quantity papers to reduce airmail costs. The use of paper with low quantification can basically reduce the cost of magazines, but it can reduce costs. More importantly, it can save wood and other resources, and contribute to the development of an environmentally friendly economy, a green economy, and the sustainable development of society. .
