What is the number of pigmented inks for digital printing?

Digital printing is on the rise of "explosive". About half of the textiles are printed using pigmented inks. More and more inkjet printers and ink manufacturers are responding to changing markets with new or modified digital presses, new pre-treatment processes and pigmented inks that improve textile printing. Here, we will introduce the advantages and disadvantages of using various types of pigment inks in textile printing and new developments.

In recent years, the demand for pigmented direct clothing digital printing (DTG), especially shirt printing, has grown rapidly. Many shirts are color printed. To provide an opaque white reflective primer surface and then print color ink on it, a white titanium dioxide pigment is required. In general, the garment should be pretreated to adhere to the white ink and prevent it from penetrating too deeply into the fabric.

It is difficult to print a highly opaque white layer with an inkjet printer at one time, usually requiring multiple passes. DuPont is a leading supplier of waterborne white inks to the direct apparel printing industry. They are the largest manufacturer of white pigments and a major manufacturer of water-based inkjet inks. They have been very successful in combining the knowledge of these fields to develop very high quality water-based white inks. The company has been focusing on this application effort, recently introducing a new line of color inks and claiming a 40% increase in color gamut over previous pigment inks. Pigment inks have been criticized for their small color gamut compared to dye inks, and this improvement may make them more acceptable.

01 roll-to-roll pigmented digital printing

Roll-to-roll (RTR) fabric printers with pigmented inks are much more complicated than regular T-shirt printers. Most types of inkjet printing can be printed on fabrics as printed on film and paper. It is also necessary to treat the fabric first in order to obtain good performance. Retaining the ink, adhering the ink, and spreading the ink droplets require a good match between the ink and the fabric.

Some pigment ink suppliers have omitted a large amount of binder in the ink formulation. Therefore, in order to achieve rubbing fastness and wash fastness, a binder is used in the pretreatment of the fabric to provide sufficient performance. The addition of binders in ink formulation and system integration is a challenge in maintaining maintenance procedures where the nozzles are not clogged.

A significant success in this area is HP's latex ink. Recently, the color gamut and "color highlight" of latex ink printed textiles are similar to dye sublimation printing. The key is the handling of the fabric and the printing mode of the printer. The third generation of latex inks has a high gloss and the sliding additive is very suitable for textile printing. The new model HP Latex 360 and Latex 850 also has a porous web for printing ink collectors.

DuPont has also introduced a new technology platform that provides direct garment digital printing inks with a wide range of color gamuts, which will provide a larger color gamut of roll-to-roll printing inks for high-speed fabric printing machines. Digifab has also introduced a new set of pigmented inks that claim to provide higher pigment concentrations and excellent adhesion to textiles for outdoor use.

02 UV ink application

UV inks printed on textiles are also becoming more popular. Pre-processing is less important at this point because the ink crosslinks almost immediately after printing. Since the UV ink contains a large amount of binder, the fabric is much stiffer and generally less handy. In addition, because the ink will penetrate into the fabric, the UV curing of the printer may not be able to cover all of the ink, and some of the ink may not be cured.

This is not desirable because uncured ink can cause skin irritation. Uncured UV inks contain monomers and other chemicals that are harmful in the unreacted state.
