Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) is commonly used as a flame retardant, and it is currently being extensively studied because it has been used globally and can rapidly accumulate in living organisms. Due to its potential health threats, recent judiciary and business groups have introduced plans to reduce or eliminate specific PBDE homologues. This application note demonstrates the analysis of common PBDE homologues by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Optimized methods and columns allow the PerkinElmer® Clarus® Gas Chromatograph to completely separate PBDE homologs and achieve high yields. The extended mass range and high quality calibration of the PerkinElmer Clarus mass spectrometer will produce extremely accurate mass spectra.
