How to use pH composite electrode correctly

(1) Ensure there are no air bubbles at the tip of the bulb. If any bubbles are present, gently apply pressure to remove them. (2) After removing the electrode from the soaking solution, rinse it thoroughly with deionized water and shake it to dry. Avoid wiping the bulb with a paper towel, as this may transfer static electricity to the glass membrane, increasing the time needed for potential stabilization. A better approach is to rinse the electrode with the test solution before use. (3) Once the pH composite electrode is placed into the sample solution, gently shake it a few times and then let it rest. This helps speed up the electrode’s response. Especially when using a molded-shell pH electrode, shaking is more important because there is a small cavity between the bulb and the housing. Sometimes, air trapped in this cavity can form bubbles, which may prevent proper contact between the liquid junction and the solution. To avoid this, vigorously shake the electrode to eliminate any bubbles. (4) After testing in a viscous sample, rinse the electrode thoroughly with deionized water several times to remove any residue on the glass membrane. In some cases, you may need to clean the electrode with other reagents first, then rinse with water and soak it in the storage solution to restore its performance. (5) Avoid exposing the electrode to strong acids, bases, or corrosive solutions. If such samples must be tested, keep the immersion time as short as possible and clean the electrode thoroughly after use. (6) Do not use the electrode in dehydrating media like absolute ethanol or concentrated sulfuric acid, as these can damage the hydrated gel layer on the bulb. The molded-shell pH composite electrode is typically made of polycarbonate (PC). PC can dissolve in certain solvents such as carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, and tetrahydrofuran. If your test solution contains these solvents, the electrode housing may be damaged. In such cases, consider using a glass-bodied pH composite electrode instead. Proper handling and maintenance of the electrode will significantly improve measurement accuracy and extend the electrode's lifespan. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for best results.
