The new high-voltage switch test station of Xi'an High Voltage Apparatus Research Institute has completed its first commercial test recently, and the test current of the circuit breaker has reached an unprecedented 80,000-ampere-times. "During the short-circuit period, the current waveform was flat and the attenuation was smaller than that of the KEMA laboratory in the Netherlands. It fully complied with the requirements of the test standards," said the director of the West Highland Institute after the test. This means that the main equipment of the test station undertaken by Harbin Electric Machinery Co., Ltd.—the world’s largest single-capacity short-circuit test generator—has successfully delivered commercial operations. The successful development of the 6500 megavolt impact generator symbolizes China's advancement into the world's advanced ranks in this field.
With the continuous increase of domestic power systems and increasingly extensive networking, it is necessary to research and develop more large-scale high-voltage and large-current circuit breakers. However, the strong current impact test of products directly in the switch laboratory is an essential means for the development of such products. The strong current required for the test is generated by the impact generator at the moment of short circuit, so this kind of motor is also called short-circuit test generator. As the name implies, this is a very special type of generator. Once a short circuit occurs to a conventional generator, it can be considered a serious accident, because huge currents often damage the generator to varying degrees. However, the normal operation of this type of generator is frequent short-circuiting, and efforts must be made to generate the largest possible current. Therefore, how to ensure that the generator can generate high currents of up to 140 kA and survive the massive impacts of the cycle is the biggest challenge for the development of this type of product.
