Japan develops a building material that absorbs radioactive cesium. Kinki University of Japan has announced that a research team led by its part-time lecturer Morimura Mori and others has developed a building material containing mineral zeolite-"zeolite calcium mortar." This kind of mortar can absorb radioactive cesium dissolved in water to the maximum extent after solidification, and it is expected to be used to construct facilities for storing radioactive pollutants or filters for purifying sewage. The tiny pores of zeolite are adsorbable and can absorb radioactive cesium. In the Sanli Island nuclear power plant accident in the United States, this material was used to treat sewage. The mortar mixed with zeolite was previously used as a building material with deodorant function. In this development, researchers added calcium ionized water to improve the strength and water resistance of the mortar after solidification. When sewage containing radioactive cesium passes through the solidified body of the new zeolite calcium mortar, cesium and cesium-containing substances can be absorbed and filtered. Because of its ability to easily penetrate water, when using this zeolite calcium mortar solidified body to absorb cesium-containing aqueous solution experiments, it successfully absorbed more than 99% of cesium in water. Since zeolite calcium mortar has numerous pore structures after solidification, it is not easy to block even if the sewage containing solid impurities is filtered. In the future, the aforementioned Japanese research team intends to continue to study various methods of using zeolite calcium mortar to improve its performance as a building material and its ability to adsorb radioactive cesium.
