United Kingdom: Edible Fruit Preservatives

A British company has developed an edible fruit preservative which is a translucent emulsion made from sucrose, starch, fatty acids and polyesters. It can be applied to apple, citrus and watermelon by spraying, brushing or dipping. Fruits such as bananas and tomatoes have a shelf life of up to 300 days. Because the preservative forms a layer of sealing film on the surface of the fruit, oxygen can be prevented from entering the interior of the fruit, thereby prolonging the ripening process of the fruit and playing a freshness keeping effect. The preservative can be eaten together with the fruit.
