Many users FDM 3D printers are in trouble a problem, in the end there is not a way to solve the case while Alice appear ABS printing. With this question, the author will share with you some of the solutions I have used in the face of this problem.
First, what is ABS printing supplies
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) It is a common plastic around us. The Lego bricks we usually see are made of ABS material. Its characteristics are high strength and good heat resistance, not only that, ABS also has a good surface finish. ABS reacts to acetone, so it is much easier to polish and polish the ABS surface with acetone.
Second, the common problems faced by ABS printing - warping
Although ABS has high strength and good heat resistance, it may be a problem to print, that is, it is difficult to stick it on the printing bed, so that when there is a part of printing, there will be a side edge curling, which is printing. ABS often encounters a problem, but there is no way to solve it. The author also shares this solution to the majority of users.
Third, why ABS consumables will appear warped
First of all, before we explain how to handle ABS print warping, let's first understand why ABS has a warp.
When ABS consumables are heated in the extruder, they have a tendency to swell. Once in the molten state, the plastic is deposited layer by layer on the build platform. When the molten plastic cools and solidifies, it also shrinks when printing parts. Several layers begin to cool and begin to shrink after printing, causing it to peel off the build platform, causing a warp condition.
Fourth, how to solve the problem of ABS consumables printing
1. Control the heating temperature of the extruder
ABS melts between 210 and 250 °C. Unless specified by the manufacturer, you should be able to use the temperature settings in this range. The author's own printer is printed at a temperature of 235 ° C, and the effect is quite good.
If you run the extruder too hot, you will notice a lot of drawing between the parts walls. If you run too cold, you may find that it is under-squeezed and cannot be printed. Of course, the temperature required by different machines is still a little biased, which requires you to constantly try different temperatures to sum up experience.
2, control the heating bed temperature
Controlling the temperature of the heated bed is a key factor in solving the warping of the model, so setting the correct temperature for the heated bed is critical. The temperature at which the plastic changes from a solid to a molten liquid is called the glass transition temperature (Tg). You need to set the heated bed temperature above this point. For ABS, the glass transition temperature is 105 ° C, so it is sufficient to control the bed temperature at 110 ° C.
3, slicing software settings
The slicer has a variety of settings that can be adjusted to suit your needs.
Edge and Support: The edge and support options in the Slice Software setup provide additional surface contact between the part and the backplane. This helps the edge or support to act as a sacrificial additive when the first layer is bonded. In the case of warping, the edges or supports will be affected while the other components will remain in good condition.
First layer height: It may be beneficial to have a thicker first layer because it increases surface contact and holds the model firmly in place. A standard rule of thumb is to set the first layer to 150% of the normal layer height.
First layer speed: The print speed of the first layer should be reduced to approximately 70% of the actual print speed. This is especially useful when your parts have sharp corners that tend to flake off when the hot end moves at a higher speed.
4, other solutions
Windshield: The windshield is also a way to solve the curling edge. With the windshield, it is conducive to maintaining a constant temperature environment. This is a single layer of thick wall around the part that prevents air from venting and speeds up the printed area.
Cooling Fans : Cooling fans are a good addition to 3D printers because they create a lot of airflow around the nozzles and quickly cool the plastic. However, this can have a negative impact when printing the first few layers. Always turn off the first 5 to 10 fans before turning it on.
Use of adhesives: There is also an effective method for anti-warping, that is, the use of adhesives, such as solid glue, textured paper, and the like. The adhesive can be applied directly to the hot bed platform to help the printing consumables adhere smoothly to the platform.
Of course, different 3D printers, which are in different printing environments, will cause ABS printing to be warped. In life, in addition to summing up the details, consulting professionals can often do more with less. If you have other problems in this area, you may want to consult a 3D professional.
