On May 6, 2015, the China International Bicycle Show kicked off in Shanghai, drawing cycling enthusiasts and industry professionals from around the world. As part of the event, the VAUDE-318 Sichuan-Tibet Bicycle Extreme Tournament held a grand press conference, where the official route was unveiled. This marked the beginning of rider registrations for the challenging journey that would take place later in the year.
The VAUDE-318 Sichuan-Tibet Bike Extreme Tournament is set to start on October 7, 2015, in Chengdu, Sichuan. Following two days of high-altitude training, participants will embark on a 10-day endurance race that will end in Lhasa, Tibet. The total distance is 2,000 kilometers, with an average elevation of 4,000 meters. Riders will face 14 super HC stages, crossing over 16 snowy mountains above 4,600 meters, and climbing more than 50,000 meters in total. With an average daily ride of 13 hours, this event pushes both physical and mental limits like never before.
According to reports, the "Riding Road" event has three standout features. First, it’s exceptionally difficult. The Sichuan-Tibet route has become a pilgrimage site for cyclists, and "Riding 318" has gained popularity as a symbol of mass cycling. However, this is the first time a high-altitude race will be held along the Kangzang section of National Highway 318, presenting a major challenge for competitors.
Second, the competition is fiercely intense. Organized by Guangzhou Langtu Events, the tournament has received strong backing from professional outdoor brands. With recent policy reforms in sports management, private organizations are playing a larger role in competitive and mass sports. The organizers aim to promote Chinese cycling through collective effort, bringing innovation to traditional racing culture.
Third, the event has a clear focus. While there are many extreme cycling events globally, China has been lacking in this area. The goal of "Riding the Road" is to establish a Chinese brand capable of hosting such extreme races. By combining the allure of Tibet with the difficulty of the course, the event hopes to attract top riders and teams worldwide.
VAUDE, a German brand and the first EMAS-certified outdoor company, has provided specialized gear for the participants. Their equipment is lightweight, quick-drying, and designed for comfort and protection in extreme conditions. This ensures that riders can tackle the tough environment with confidence.
Event manager He Dingding shared details about the schedule, emphasizing the rigorous planning behind the race. Meanwhile, Zhang Nuo, a key rider from the VAUDE team, spoke about the importance of preparation and resilience.
The launch ceremony was attended by numerous guests, marking a significant moment for the cycling community. For those interested in joining, registration is now open via the official website: [link]. You can also download the app or scan the QR code for more information.
