New plastic food packaging with passive and active barrier capabilities

U.S. companies have successfully developed a new type of plastic food packaging that has both passive and active barrier functions, effectively inhibits the infiltration of oxygen, and even after cooking food bags, the effect will not be reduced. The new packaging can not only extend the storage period of the product, but also can be directly heated by a microwave oven, which is particularly suitable for the packaging of convenient foods. According to reports, this new package, called the sum of barriers, consists of six layers of different materials. The first layer is polypropylene, a highly oil-repellent polymeric material. The second and fourth layers are adhesive glues, and the oxygen-blocking polymeric material EVOH is between them. The fifth layer is an oxygen scavenger mixture called an active barrier that not only prevents the ingress of foreign oxygen molecules, but also absorbs oxygen in the package. The last layer is polypropylene material. In the new package, the oxygen scavenger maintains its activity even in the presence of moisture, thus ensuring the shelf life of the food.
