New regulations for 40 million tons of packaging waste were introduced to force packaging around the environment

According to the statistics of the Ministry of Commerce, China's nearly 24 billion U.S. dollars worth of export goods each year are affected by the lack of packaging requirements, and a considerable portion of this is caused by packaging that does not meet the green requirements. In response, the National Development and Reform Commission issued the “Management Regulations for the Inspection and Supervision of the Import and Export of Food Packaging Containers and Packaging Materials”, which has been implemented since August 1.

It is understood that "green requirements" mainly refers to the environmental protection packaging certification system ISO14000. This environmental management certification is known as the internationally recognized “green passport”. At present, most countries in the world use this as a standard to promote the environmental protection packaging model. The ISO14000 series expressly provides that all internationally purchased products (packages) must undergo environmental certification and ecological assessment LCA and use environmental labels. Europe is implementing and improving green certification policies and regulations. Countries that have started to implement the green certification system will have restrictions on quantity and price when they import goods that do not have environmental management certification.

Domestic packaging environmental protection issues

In addition, many companies in our country are seriously lacking relevant information on the international market or export destination market, and have limited understanding of the requirements for packaging materials, packaging standards, and packaging specifications in importing countries, resulting in the packaging of export products not meeting the requirements of the target market. Judging from the legal provisions, China's relevant laws and regulations for packaging products are relatively backward. Taking food packaging as an example, of the more than 80 relevant regulations, only 30 were introduced after 2000. Moreover, there are considerable distances between the developed countries in terms of capital, technology, and environmental awareness of producers.
