In the world of *Star Trek*, fans are familiar with the iconic medical tricorder—a handheld device that doctors use to quickly and accurately diagnose a patient's condition, replacing traditional tools like stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, and lab tests. This futuristic gadget can capture all vital data in seconds. While it may sound like science fiction, the reality is much closer than you think. Thanks to advancements in **3D printing**, scientists are making this vision a tangible reality.
Recently, a team of engineers at Johns Hopkins University, led by Dr. Gene Fridman, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering, developed a groundbreaking 3D-printed device capable of measuring a patient’s key vital signs in just seconds. The device uses a thumb pad and mouthpiece to collect critical health data such as blood pressure, oxygen levels, heart rate, body temperature, and more. The thumb pad includes a mini pulse oximeter for measuring blood oxygen, while the mouthpiece employs advanced algorithms and multiple sensors to detect additional vital signs.
This innovation has led to the formation of a startup called Multisensor Diagnostics, which the team named *MouthLab*. Although still in the prototype phase, many of its components have already been 3D-printed, significantly reducing both time and costs during development.
Dr. Fridman describes the device as a “check engine light†for the human body. It can be used at home or on-site without requiring special training. He believes it will gather more data than traditional settings like ambulances, emergency rooms, or even doctor’s offices during a medical evaluation.
The team’s current goal is to allow users to simply place the device in front of them, breathe normally, and get their vital signs measured in under 10 seconds. The final product will display the collected data on a built-in screen and also transmit the information to a laptop or cloud platform for further analysis.
Fridman explains that *MouthLab* empowers individuals without medical training to make better-informed decisions about their health. He envisions the device playing a crucial role in improving healthcare access in underdeveloped regions, reducing the burden on emergency rooms, and enabling earlier disease detection and treatment.
