Fabric innovation! Not swearing sportswear, the secret is actually a shrimp shell

When the gym is packed and sweat is flowing, the biggest concern isn't just the workout—it's the lingering smell of sweat that clings to your clothes. What makes it even worse is when sportswear made from synthetic materials, meant for breathability, ends up smelling after a few washes. It’s not just uncomfortable; it’s downright embarrassing. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, a Vancouver-based startup named Strongbody has finally cracked this long-standing issue. They’ve incorporated chitin—derived from shrimp shells—into their fabrics, making sweat-wicking clothing odor-free. Their latest products, a $22 T-shirt and a $74 men’s short (priced at $65), have been gaining traction on Kickstarter. The campaign recently reached its goal of $15,000, raising over $21,000 so far. Other brands, like Lululemon and Patagonia, have also tackled the problem by using silver chloride in their fabrics, which inhibits the growth of odor-causing bacteria. Strongbody, however, chose a different approach: chitin, a natural fiber extracted from crustacean shells. This material has been used as a dietary supplement and in medical bandages due to its antibacterial properties. Meghan Conyers, one of the founders, explained that Strongbody wasn’t aiming to create high-tech athletic wear. Initially, they wanted to offer stylish, well-fitting gymwear—not for yoga, running, or cycling, but specifically for those who hit the weights. Conyers is confident that the chitin-infused fabric is safe and comfortable. According to a 2005 study in *Military Medicine*, people with shellfish allergies don’t typically react to chitin powder. The company’s range includes a $68 vest and a $148 sleeveless sweater, both designed to be soft, wrinkle-resistant, and chemical-friendly. Their designs feature mesh panels and cutouts, blending functionality with style. Before launching Strongbody, Conyers was a personal trainer. In 2011, she partnered with gym manager Quincy Samycia to develop elastic fabrics that enhanced the body’s shape. They introduced a polyester-chitin blend for men’s and women’s activewear online. Conyers shared that she and her co-founder still wear pieces from two years ago, and they remain fresh and odor-free.
