Natural turf drainage is crucial for maintaining a functional and safe football field, especially in areas prone to frequent rainfall. To ensure that matches can continue or resume quickly after rain, it's essential to have a well-designed system, combined with precise construction techniques and high-quality materials. This ensures the final outcome meets the necessary performance standards.
The site’s drainage system consists of three key components: surface slope drainage, soil bed drainage, and forced drainage. Each plays an important role in managing water effectively and preventing waterlogging on the playing surface.
Surface slope drainage is the primary method used to direct water away from the field. The overall slope of the site is designed to guide water towards designated drainage points. During construction, each layer of the grass bed must be carefully structured, with separate paving and rolling operations to maintain the required gradient. The slope of each layer should be strictly controlled, starting from the base. A 5m x 5m grid system is commonly used for measurement to ensure uniformity in thickness and slope. Proper layering and grading are critical to prevent water accumulation and ensure smooth runoff.
Soil bed drainage involves allowing water to percolate through the layers of the grass bed and into the underlying soil. During construction, each layer should be laid and compacted individually, avoiding mixing or cutting back layers. Clean materials are essential—especially in the gravel layer, which should not contain more than 5% mud. Additionally, blind ditches are often installed to assist in drainage. These ditches must be constructed with precision, as improper installation can reduce their effectiveness. The ditches should not be too wide or deep. After excavation, they should be trimmed according to the longitudinal slope. When placing the drainage pipes, they should be straightened and properly aligned. Gravel should then be added around the pipe to protect it, and the backfilling process should be done in layers to avoid damage. Finally, a steel grate is inserted into the gravel layer and gently shaken to settle the material.
Forced drainage is particularly suitable for regions with heavy rainfall. Unlike gravity-based drainage, this method uses a network of pipes buried in the gravel layer. Water is drawn through filter pipes connected to a main pipe, which leads to a pump room. The pump then removes the water from the field, making it ideal for professional football fields where quick drainage is essential. The installation involves embedding filter pipes between two blind ditches, connecting them with threaded joints, and extending them into a sand control filter layer. A variable cross-section three-way pipe is connected to the main line. The trench for the filter pipe should be excavated with a 1% gradient, and only gravel should be used for backfilling. Soil should never be used, as it can clog the system. This method allows for rapid drainage, enabling play even during light rain. However, it comes at a higher cost and is not sufficient on its own. It should be combined with the other two methods for optimal results.
