Recently, Huanggang Customs intercepted a mainland passenger carrying 9.4 kilograms of unreported *Tridacna* (commonly known as "chequ") at the Huanggang Port Travel Inspection Arrival Hall. *Tridacna*, also referred to as "golden cowrie," is classified as a nationally first-class protected species. On the evening of December 11, customs officers conducted routine inspections on transit passengers at the Huanggang Port. A mainland traveler carrying a large suitcase and a heavy backpack drew the attention of the officers. The backpack appeared unusually bulky and suspicious. The customs officer scanned the bag using an X-ray machine, which revealed only one large object inside—clearly not a typical travel item. Upon opening the package, they discovered a shell-like object wrapped in a plastic bag. The shell was thick, ivory-white in color, and had a rough surface with natural radial ridges. After initial identification, the item was confirmed to be a *Tridacna*, a national first-class protected animal, weighing a total of 9.4 kilograms. The passenger claimed to be working in Papua New Guinea and stated that he had purchased the item locally. He intended to bring it back to China for processing into ornaments or jewelry. However, he was unaware that it was a protected species. According to officials from Huanggang Customs, *Tridacna* is considered a rare marine organism globally, and unauthorized import or export is strictly prohibited without proper permits. This incident highlights the importance of awareness regarding wildlife protection laws and the consequences of illegal wildlife trade.
