The origins of Vikan’s approach to innovation

This blog post is part of a short series celebrating Vikan's 125th anniversary. As we reflect on our history, we’ve dug deep into our archives to share stories that highlight key milestones and themes in our journey. By revisiting these moments, we hope to shed light on who we are as a company today. --- In his memoir, *Life and Works*, Vikan founder A.P. Pedersen shares several anecdotes from the early days of his brushmaking business. These tales resonate deeply with us at Vikan—they've become ingrained in our corporate culture. One story, in particular, stands out. Pedersen recounts how he pondered ways to attract new clients for his burgeoning brushmaker's shop. "The new dairies popping up in the 1880s and '90s used a lot of brushes," he writes, "and it occurred to me that creating high-quality brushes tailored specifically for dairies could be lucrative." This realization marked the beginning of a customer-centric approach to innovation that remains central to Vikan's ethos today. Pedersen explains that the idea struck him while reflecting on how best to engage with potential clients. "I realized I needed to visit the dairies myself to understand their needs," he notes. This hands-on method laid the groundwork for the collaborative spirit that drives our innovations today. --- Not long after, Pedersen embarked on visits to local dairies. He would conduct thorough inspections, taking note of their specific requirements. Back at his workshop, he meticulously crafted brushes designed to meet those needs. "I began experimenting with designs I believed dairy workers would appreciate," he recalls. After completing prototypes, he sent them off to dairies for testing. The positive feedback confirmed his belief in a business model built on trust and mutual benefit. --- What strikes us most about this tale is how it encapsulates an entire philosophy of innovation—one that prioritizes customer input at every step. Unlike many businesses of the era, Pedersen’s strategy began and ended with direct customer engagement. At Vikan, we continue this tradition. While our founder traveled by horse and carriage to connect with dairies, we now gather insights through online surveys and conversations with clients. Our sales and R&D teams regularly consult with customers to refine product ideas. Just as Pedersen experimented with brush designs, we focus on developing groundbreaking solutions. And, mirroring his practice, we send prototypes to customers for real-world testing and feedback. Interestingly, when we developed our modern customer-focused innovation process, we didn’t consciously draw inspiration from Pedersen’s memoir. It seems his approach was already woven into our DNA. --- Here are some recent blog posts that delve deeper into aspects of our heritage: **Recent Blog Posts** * **"Vikan, Technology, and People"** By Lotte Jensen, Marketing Project Manager There’s no denying that Vikan’s success over the past 125 years is closely tied to advancements in technology.
