Ever wondered what life was like for ancient Chinese people? The Chinese Woodcarving Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into their world. Recently, the “2014 World Craft Culture Festival,” hosted by the World Handicraft Council, opened in Dongyang. This event also marked the official opening of the China Woodcarving Museum, adding a major cultural landmark to the city.

The museum spans 26,000 square meters—equivalent to about three and a half football fields. It serves as a vivid textbook on the history and evolution of Chinese woodcarving. With five exhibition halls, it showcases woodcarvings from around the globe, offering visitors a comprehensive view of this traditional art form.

One of the highlights is the "Ancient Boudoir Furniture" section. For many young people, choosing a home decor style can be overwhelming—European, modern, or minimalist. However, when it comes to traditional Chinese styles, especially those with intricate carvings, younger generations often feel disconnected. But after visiting the museum, that perception might change completely.

Step into the Social Life Hall, and you're instantly transported back in time. Here, you can see everything from ancient banquets and funeral rituals to dowries given to brides. Every detail is intertwined with the craftsmanship of woodcarving.

In one display, a young woman plays the piano in an elegant boudoir, while another waits nearby. The wooden furniture inside is beautifully carved, warm, and inviting. After exploring, you can't help but feel a deep connection to this historical lifestyle.

Historically, due to strict customs, women from wealthy families were not allowed to go out much. Their lives revolved around activities like playing chess, calligraphy, and cultivating feminine grace—all within the confines of their boudoirs. As a result, the furniture in these spaces was always luxurious, meticulously arranged, and richly decorated with woodcarvings that reflected the elegance of their daily lives.

At the festival, a set of huanghuali (yellow rosewood) furniture valued at 500 million yuan drew huge crowds. Visitors couldn’t stop taking photos, and many were amazed by its price tag. A young man even shared a photo on WeChat immediately after seeing it.

This collection, made from a rare huanghuali log weighing over 4 tons and more than a thousand years old, is considered the finest in the world. It’s the most expensive piece displayed at the festival. Interestingly, some experts noted that this same set was exhibited two or three years ago, but then it was priced at just 100 million. Clearly, the value of such rare wood is rising fast.
