September is National Food Safety Education Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of food safety in our daily lives. This initiative was created by the Partnership for Food Safety Education, a non-profit organization committed to reducing foodborne illnesses in the United States through education and public awareness.
Every year, approximately 1 in 6 Americans gets sick from contaminated food. Many of these illnesses are caused by harmful pathogens like norovirus, Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, and Shiga-toxin producing E. coli. While the entire food supply chain shares responsibility for keeping food safe, consumers also play a crucial role in preventing illness at home.
To help reduce the risk of foodborne illness, the Partnership for Food Safety Education develops and promotes science-based messages, tools, and resources for consumers. Their efforts are supported by a network of over 13,000 educators across the country.
One of their key initiatives is the "Core Four Practices," which are essential steps to prevent the spread of bacteria in the kitchen:
- **Clean** – Wash hands and surfaces frequently and properly.
- **Separate** – Keep raw meat away from other foods to avoid cross-contamination.
- **Cook** – Use a food thermometer to ensure food reaches a safe internal temperature.
- **Chill** – Refrigerate perishable foods within two hours to slow bacterial growth.
Another important campaign is “Don’t WING IT,†which focuses on safe poultry handling. The campaign provides clear guidance on how to handle, store, and cook poultry safely to reduce the risk of Salmonella and Campylobacter infections.
The Partnership also launched the “Story of Your Dinner†campaign, offering recipes, videos, and educational materials to help families prepare meals safely and enjoyably. These resources are designed to make food safety easy to understand and implement in everyday cooking.
