As a food lover and home cook, I’ve always been conscious of food safety in my kitchen. But working at Remco has opened my eyes to just how much goes into ensuring the safety of our food from farm to fork. It’s incredible to see how much knowledge and care food safety professionals put into their work every day.
In my own kitchen, I follow basic guidelines like using a meat thermometer to avoid under or overcooking. I also make sure to check cans for dents before buying them—not just because they look better on the shelf, but because damaged cans can compromise the product inside. After grilling, I always clean my tools thoroughly before flipping any food, and I never reuse the same plate for raw and cooked items.
Over the past three years in the food industry, I've started thinking more deeply about food safety beyond my own home. I now find myself wondering about the practices of the companies that produce the food I buy. When I hear about a brand going above and beyond for safety, it really makes an impression.
One company that stands out is Earthbound Farms, a California-based producer of salad greens. I recently learned that they are BRC-certified, which means they undergo strict third-party audits. This level of commitment to food safety gives me confidence in their products. Plus, they’re open and honest about their processes, which builds trust with consumers like me.
Now, my approach to food safety starts with understanding where my food comes from. I don’t just care about the temperature when it’s done cooking—I want to know about the safety measures taken by the producers. If a brand shows dedication to food safety, I’m more than willing to pay a little extra for that peace of mind. It’s a small shift in perspective, but it makes a big difference in how I shop and cook.
