How to encourage recycling through packaging

Recently, our group conducted a survey on unboxing experiences, and the results were quite encouraging. An impressive 97% of participants expressed their desire to recycle the packaging they receive. That's fantastic! However, the findings also brought attention to a concerning issue: 14% of respondents admitted they weren't sure whether certain packaging could be recycled due to unclear labeling. This lack of clarity seems to be a significant barrier for some consumers.

While recycling at home is a noble goal, it isn't always straightforward. Recycling rules vary depending on where you live, making it challenging for both producers and consumers to stay informed. Businesses that use packaging have a responsibility to ensure their products are as eco-friendly as possible, and this starts with making it simple for end-users to recycle.

How Can Businesses Make Recycling Easier for Consumers?

If you're a business that relies on packaging, there are several steps you can take to promote recycling and make your packaging more sustainable:

Select Packaging Materials That Are Easily Recycled

When designing your packaging, it's essential to prioritize materials that are widely recyclable. Opting for these types of materials immediately supports higher recycling rates. Additionally, reducing the amount of material used while maintaining functionality can significantly reduce waste. Consider whether your packaging can serve multiple purposes, such as being reusable or repurposed, to foster a circular economy.

Implement Clear and Understandable Labeling

Providing clear instructions on your packaging helps customers recycle correctly. Our survey showed just how crucial this is for consumers. Be sure to include the following details on your packaging:

  • The type of material used
  • Whether it can be recycled curbside or elsewhere
  • Options for reuse or composting

Consider joining initiatives like OPRL, which offers universally recognized recycling symbols to simplify the process for your customers.

Offer Additional Recycling Guidance

Beyond labeling, you could provide supplementary information about recycling your packaging. This could be especially helpful if your packaging isn't typically curbside recyclable. Adding a QR code to your packaging that links to detailed recycling instructions on your website can make the process smoother for consumers. This approach also presents an excellent chance to engage with your customers about your company's sustainability efforts.

A tubular picket fence is a type of fencing that is made up of vertical pickets or posts that are connected by horizontal rails. The pickets are typically made from tubular steel or aluminum, which makes them durable and resistant to rust and corrosion.
