The researchers discovered a novel SARS-like coronavirus

A joint research team led by Tu Changchun, a researcher at the Institute of Military Veterinary Medicine of the Chinese Academy of Military Medical Sciences, detected a novel SARS-like coronavirus in Yunnan bats. Whole-genome sequencing and antigenic analysis showed that the virus has the ability to infect humans, and it is inferred that it is likely to be an ancestor or "relative" of the SARS virus, providing important data for clarifying the source of SARS. The latest discovery of this bat virus has recently been published online in the international core academic journal Journal of Virology. According to Tu Changchun, bats are wild animals with the most viruses in nature. More than 130 species have been discovered, including Ebola, rabies and coronavirus. SARS is caused by a novel coronavirus. Although the scientific community has discovered many types of coronaviruses in bats in recent years, and gradually determined that bats are natural hosts for SARS-like coronaviruses, there has been no evidence of interpersonal transmission and significant differences in viral gene structure. In 2012, the Middle East reported a new type of coronavirus-caused infectious disease, the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, which is clinically similar to SARS and once again caused panic in SARS. The Tuchun Research Group cooperated with the Yunnan Provincial Institute of Endemic Diseases and the Chengdu Military Region Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Through high-throughput sequencing technology combined with virus isolation and identification methods, the pathogen ecology of bat-borne viruses in Yunnan Province was investigated for the first time. The new SARS-like coronavirus they found in bats provides direct support for the "SARS-derived bats." However, due to the high mutation rate and high frequency of gene recombination of coronavirus, China will continue to monitor it. In addition, the research team also discovered a new type of hepatitis virus from the bats in Yunnan for the first time and named it the bat hepatitis virus, which clarified the genetic diversity of the new virus and separated the two new bat wheels for the first time in the world. Phenoviruses, their genome-wide sequences were determined, and bioinformation analysis found that bat rotavirus in the region may be the ancestor of the pathogen causing childhood diarrhea in individual Southeast Asian countries.
