Beautiful Terrazzo Interior Design Made From Recycled Plastic
Living in color has always been my preference, don’t you agree? The eyewear store owned by Ace & Tate in Amsterdam has an interior design that truly catches the eye. The walls are covered in terrazzo made from vibrant, recycled plastic that’s not just eco-friendly but also visually striking. It’s the kind of design that demands attention, and in a positive way! This collaboration between Ace & Tate and the sustainable materials company Plasticiet is part of their ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility. By 2030, Ace & Tate aims to achieve carbon neutrality, and by the end of 2020, all their frames will be crafted from 100% bio-acetate—a recyclable acetate blended with bio-based plasticizers instead of petroleum-based ones. Plasticiet, co-founded by designers Marten van Middelkoop and Joost Dingemans, specializes in turning plastic waste into usable materials that mimic traditional stones like marble and granite. For the Ace & Tate shop in Antwerp, they incorporated large chunks of bright blue, red, green, and yellow into the terrazzo design. This approach not only breathes new life into discarded plastics but also adds a pop of color that’s hard to ignore.
Plasticiet emphasized that all the plastic used was sourced locally, and they carefully selected each piece to create a harmonious color palette. Over 1,000 kilograms of plastic went into this project, showcasing the firm's dedication to sustainability. Panels of recycled plastic terrazzo now cover the walls, arches, shelves, and counters of the shop. Even the display cases for the eyeglasses and sunglasses highlight the recycling process, adding an educational element to the store’s design. As designers, their role in reducing virgin plastic usage is crucial, and they set an inspiring example for others in the industry.
