The annual Baoyu is located in Suohujima Township, Jiuzhi County, Guoluo Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province. The main peak stands at 5,369 meters above sea level and is the highest peak of Bayan Hara Mountain. It was officially recognized as a national geological park in 2005. Baoyu is bordered by Aba County in Sichuan Province and is known as the famous Shenshan Mountain that spans across Sichuan, Gansu, and Qinghai. The legend of King Gesar, a hero from Tibetan epic tales, is widely told here. The breathtaking ice formations, majestic rocks, and steep mountains create an air of mystery around this area.
Also known as Guoluo Mountain, Baoyu is part of the Bayan Hara Mountain range. According to legend, it is the birthplace of the Guoluo tribes and is held in high regard by the locals.
The Baoyu Mountain Range extends 40 kilometers in length and 25 kilometers in width, with numerous peaks exceeding 4,000 meters in height, including its main peak at 5,369 meters. Snow and ice melt into water, forming many lakes such as Fairy Lake, Witch Lake, Sungea Maucho, Martha Lake, and Ma Dang Lake. There's a beautiful myth about a hunter named Jura who once saved the only son of Nian Bao Yu Ze Shen, who had been transformed into a white snake. Later, Bao Shan deified itself during a battle between Bai Tuo and the devil, and the hunter killed the devil. As a reward, Nian Bao Yu gave his daughter to the hunter, and they had three sons—Aung Yau Ben, Ashi Sakamoto, and Banmamoto—who became the ancestors of the Guoluo Tibetan people.
Traveling from Chengdu to Baoyu covers more than 600 kilometers. Along the way, there are stretches without gas stations, so planning fuel stops is essential. A three-day trip can cover the Fairy Lake and Witch Lake, with accommodation costs ranging from 60 to 80 yuan per night. Chartered cars cost about 300 yuan for a round trip. If walking, you can take a train from Jiuji to the next stop. Camping fees are around 20 yuan per person. Seven-seater vehicles cost 500 yuan for a ride. The road leading to Gurungsa is currently being upgraded, and tickets may be introduced next year. Renting a horse costs 200 yuan per day, while camping tents are 20 yuan each. Entrance fees to the park are 120 yuan per person. Toll fees on the Chengguan Expressway and Duowen Expressway (Yingxiu section) amount to 38 yuan. Parking is 10 yuan, and the average altitude is over 4,000 meters. High-altitude travelers should prepare Rhodiola and avoid overexertion.
UV radiation on the plateau is intense, so sun protection is crucial. Bring sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. Avoid getting sunburned quickly. Some suggest wearing skirts to enjoy the wildflowers. Locals are friendly, often greeting with "Tashidler," which should be reciprocated. Be respectful when taking photos and drive carefully to avoid hitting livestock, as compensation may be required.
On the first day of the trek, July 12, we started from Kuji to the Gurung Temple, then continued to the following measures. The road was muddy due to rain, and the path to Longji Temple was difficult. Despite the weather, we reached the campsite after a long walk. There were large dogs near some tents, so stay away from them.
The second day, July 13, was challenging with heavy rain and thunderstorms. We walked 17 kilometers, crossing two cornices. The terrain was steep, and the group was reduced to just two people. We reached the highest point, but due to the weather, we decided to rest instead of continuing the next day.
On the third day, light snow fell. We climbed slowly, and the road was slippery. We didn't eat much and arrived at the Fairy Lake entrance by 9 p.m.
Returning to the city was a relief. The journey was tough, but the scenery made it worthwhile.
