This article is freely available to equip cool special contributors. Responsibility editor: Han Da The annual Baoyu is located in Suohujima Township, Jiuzhi County, Guoluo Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province. The main peak reaches 5369 meters above sea level and is the highest peak of Bayan Hara Mountain. It was officially approved as a national geological park in 2005. The area borders Aba County in Sichuan Province and is known as the famous Shenshan Mountain that spans across Sichuan, Gansu, and Qinghai. The legend of King Gesar, a revered Tibetan hero, is widely told here. The breathtaking ice formations, majestic rocks, and steep mountains create an air of mystery around this place. [1] Known also as Guoluo Mountain, it is part of the Bayan Hara Mountain range. According to local legend, it is the birthplace of the Guoluo tribes, which adds to its spiritual significance. The Baoyu Mountain Range stretches 40 kilometers long and 25 kilometers wide, with numerous peaks exceeding 4,000 meters in elevation, including the main peak at 5,369 meters. Snow and ice melt into countless lakes, such as the Fairy Lake, Witch Lake, Sungea Maucho, Martha Lake, and Ma Dang Lake. There's a beautiful local myth about a hunter named Jura who saved the son of Nian Bao Yu Ze Shen, who had been turned into a white snake. Later, when Bao Shan deified himself in a battle against Bai Tuo, the hunter helped defeat the devil. As a reward, Nian Bao assigned his daughter to the hunter, and they had three sons—Aung Yau Ben, Ashi Sakamoto, and Banmamoto—who became the ancestors of the Guoluo Tibetans. During our trip to Baoyu, we experienced both stunning landscapes and challenging conditions. From Chengdu to Baoyu, the journey covers over 600 kilometers. We encountered several road issues, like long stretches without gas stations, so planning fuel stops was essential. The trip can be done in three days if you only visit Fairy Lake and Witch Lake, with accommodation ranging from 60 to 80 yuan per night. A chartered car for the route costs around 300 yuan. If walking, taking a train from Jiuji to the next stop is an option. Camping fees are around 20 yuan per person, and tents cost about 20 yuan each. The entrance fee is 120 yuan per person. Toll roads on the Chengguan Expressway and Duowen Expressway add about 38 yuan to the total cost. Baoyu sits at an average altitude of over 4,000 meters, so acclimatization is important. Preparing Rhodiola beforehand is recommended. Avoid overexertion and maintain a steady pace. UV radiation is intense, so sun protection is crucial—sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are a must. Many Tibetans are friendly and will greet you with “Tashidler,” so returning the greeting is polite. Be cautious when taking photos and avoid disturbing animals or livestock. Our trek started on July 12 under light rain, with the first day involving a long walk to the Zinfancha camp. Due to weather changes, we ended up at Decocu instead. The second day was particularly tough, with heavy rain and thunderstorms. The third day brought snow, making the path slippery and exhausting. Despite the challenges, the beauty of the landscape made it all worthwhile. For those planning a similar trip, proper equipment is essential. A backpack with at least 55L capacity (for men) or 50L (for women) is necessary. Choose a comfortable one that fits well. Clothing should include waterproof and quick-drying layers, along with warm gear for cold nights. A sleeping bag rated for -10°C is ideal, and a two-person tent with good windproofing is recommended. Hiking boots, trekking poles, and a headlamp are also critical. Don’t forget sunscreen, gloves, and a hat. Communication tools like GPS devices and walkie-talkies help stay on track. Finally, bring enough food and water, and always pack out your trash. This area is remote, and environmental responsibility is key. With proper preparation, Baoyu offers an unforgettable adventure into one of China’s most beautiful and mysterious high-altitude regions.
