Audi: Metal 3D printing will be used in finished car manufacturing

The application of 3D printing technology in the field of automobile manufacturing is not new. We have previously reported that the famous automobile manufacturer Audi has used 3D printing technology to create news of its classic racing car. Recently, it was reported that the company is experimenting with the use of metal 3D printing technology to manufacture complex metal parts used in finished vehicles.

3D printing technology has developed at an alarming rate since its inception. Previously, we may have only seen automakers using this technology to produce prototypes of some vehicles, and now they have developed into finished car manufacturing. Traditional manufacturing methods often take time and money when producing some complex parts inside a car. At this time, 3D printing technology can make a big difference. The 3D printed parts use very fine steel or aluminum metal powder, which is less than half the size of human hair, so it is superior to traditional manufacturing technology in precision.

Audi currently uses a large-size metal 3D printer that can produce parts 240 mm long and 200 mm wide. They also said that they will introduce larger 3D printing devices.

Hubert Watl, who is responsible for tool manufacturing at Audi, said: "We will work with our research partners to advance this new manufacturing process. One of our goals is to use metal parts for general car production."

Just last week, Audi used metal 3D printing technology to create a complete classic car. This half-size 3D printing car can accommodate one driver. The company said at the time that they would work with other members of the parent company, the Volkswagen Group, to find ways to use metal 3D printing and sand printing for automotive production.

Metal 3D printing is the most popular technology in the manufacturing field, such as aerospace and automotive manufacturing. Their industry characteristics require the use of high-performance materials, so metal 3D printing is certainly an ideal choice.

According to a survey by Stratasys Direct Manufacturing, high-performance and high-strength lightweight metals are the most popular in 3D printing consumables. Therefore, not only is the high-tech field, but even ordinary makers are looking forward to the development and innovation of metal 3D printing.
